The prediction of noise from the design of an engine requires computational models for predicting both the vibratory and acoustic properties. In this paper recent developments in the use of the finite element method for predicting the vibratory properties and the application of the boundary element method for prediction of the acoustic properties are considered. the methods are demonstrated on the Ricardo crankcase simulation rig.
